Beating frauders at their own game. Card Center manager at paynet monitors Visa and ATM cards for pesa point members

Unusual Transaction

As required by her job,Ms Keya reports to work by 7.30 am everyday to get briefing from her team on what happened the previous night.

She says the most common form of fraud in kenya happens when people are carjacked and their automated teller machines (ATM) cards taken.

For her,the Fifa world cup that began Friday in South Africa, comes with further challenges. She says for nextt month, she and her team of nine staff will be busy monitoring card activities because many frauders are likely to strike during the world cupseason. Though she says frauders are always a step ahead, she says she and the team have often stopped in their tracks.

Unusual Transaction

Ms Keya has other duties besides dealing with card fraud, she says her job at the card center is even an adventure. In a month, she says, the card center foils two to 10 fraud cases. Six months ago,she and the team detected a card that had too much activity the frequency of the transactions in a day were more than an average number a card holder could execute.''We could tell the person was moving from here to there. We had one of our staff chase him to one of the banks where we arrested him”.says.
The case involved two men from an Eastern European country running around with 100 cloned credit and ATM cards. In most cases people compromise their cards by writing down PIN numbers somewhere. They had stolen card data from a compromised system.

Keep PIN Safe

Although her team is on top of things, she has advise for card owners:''Keep your card safe, keep your PIN safe. In most cases, people compromise their cards by sending someone else to an ATM machine or by writing down PIN numbers somewhere”, she says.

The mother of two says she got into employment at the Barclays Bank straight from high school in 1990.She worked In various departments before she landed at the bank's card center in 1998,where she worked until 2005,when she moved to paynet.
