Paynet Group sponsors African Banking Technology
Conference
The Paynet Group was the lead
sponsors of the African Banking Technology Conference,
held at Nairobi’s Grand Regency Hotel over
5 – 8 February 2007
Announcing the sponsorship,
Bernard Matthewman, Group Managing Director of
Paynet, said: “Computing and communications
technology is increasingly important for Africa’s
banks and other financial institutions to deliver
high-quality services for clients – as well
spread services to the vast majority of the continent’s
un-banked populace.
The involvement by leaders in
embracing and using technology to drive businesses
is encouraging.
This is why the Group felt it was important to
support this regional banking conference to help
bankers gain and share knowledge on best practices
around the world and regionally. This conference
had an excellent blend of banking leaders and
technologists that have learned to apply and blend
technology into effective products in their unique
African markets as well as some recognized international
experts”
The conference gathered the
continent’s banking fraternity to participate
in high-level strategy and technology briefings
on the deployment of computing and telecommunications
to achieve efficiency, higher profitability and
broader spread, according to the organizers, AITEC
Africa.
“Africa’s financial
sector aspires to world-class systems and standards
that match best practices in developed economies.
But at the same time, they have to seek growth
in the region’s vast majority of unbanked
who require low-cost mass banking services. The
effective application of IT and telecommunication
solutions is essential for developing a profitable
balance between these two sides of the banking
market,” said Sean Moroney, founder and
Chairman of AITEC Africa.
“World-class systems have
to be carefully examined and assessed for their
appropriateness to extend services to mass, low-income,
mostly rural customers – instead of widening
the divide between a banking system that serves
an urban elite, delivering high-value services
to a limited market, and the vast majority of
the population that remains unbanked and therefore
excluded from the formal economy.”
The event also included a specialized
exhibition of banking solutions and services.
The first day of the conference,
6th February, was dedicated to more business related
issues, to which business people from financial
institutions attended, whilst days two and three
had a more technical and process emphasis and
accordingly involved persons from technical and
operation units.
