2008 African Banking Technology Conference expands to full week of knowledge-sharing

AITEC Africa, organizer of the annual African Banking Technology Conference, has announced that next year’s African Banking Technology Conference, scheduled to take place in Nairobi in February, has been extended to five days, to include the main conference and exhibition over three days, and a range of Masterclasses and workshops before and after.
The dates of the conference are now Monday 18th – Friday 22nd February 2008 and the venue is the Kenyatta International Conference Centre, East Africa’s largest conference venue.
Announcing the expansion of the programme, Sean Moroney, Chairman of AITEC Africa, said: “By offering such an extensive educational programme over five days, we are increasing the value of the event for banking professionals traveling to attend it from throughout Africa. And through the specialized Masterclasses, delegates can select the specialized education topics they want to focus on.”
Paynet Group, which includes Paynet Kenya, PesaPoint and EFT Kenya, the region’s leading provider of banking services and lead sponsor of the conference, welcomed the expansion of the programme as an opportunity to maximize the impact of the conference.
The conference is going to have a strong regional focus, with the theme: “Sharing Knowledge and Best Practices in Banking across East Africa”.
The following Masterclasses have been confirmed:
- An Executive Guide to Back Office System Selection, by Mark Sibthorpe, President of BankNews, Canada
- Project management for effective systems implementation, by Tan Chee Peng, CEO, Team Synthesis, Mauritius & Singapore
- Planning and implementing a holistic security strategy, by Maiendra Moodley, former security advisor, South African reserve Bank.
- Best Practices in Anti-Money Laundering Measures, by Nigel Morris-Cotterill, Head of the Anti-Money Laundering Network, Malaysia
The main conference will focus on the following key themes on each of the three days:
- Day 1: Software, hardware & systems for productivity, risk management & security
- Day 2: Payment systems, cards, ATMs, POS
- Day 3: Banking the Unbanked: Microfinance systems & mobile payments
Other leading suppliers of banking systems and technologies have announced their sponsorship of the event. Simba Technologies has signed up as a co-sponsor and will have a “Simba Technology Banking Solutions Pavilion” at the event, where it will showcase its full range of banking products and services in partnership with its international suppliers, including Infosys, ACI Worldwide and many others.
Upaid, a leading supplier of mobile payment systems, will sponsor the “Banking the Unbanked” Day at the conference. Announcing the sponsorship, Shaun Campbell of Upaid, said: “Upaid’s technology is ideally suited for widespread roll-out of banking services for the mass of unbanked in Africa. We therefore have a passion for the issues to be discussed on this special focus day of the conference and want to give it our full backing. We are delighted to be working with AITEC in increasing knowledge in this area through the conference.”
Postilion, an international leader in inter-bank payment systems, has also confirmed its co-sponsorship of the event.
Two companies have so far signed up for Showcase Presentations in the conference:
- iVeri will do a presentation on “The frontiers of payment technologies”.
- Clickatell will do a presentation on “The Mobile Device as the Next Generation Channel for Banks”
The ATM Industry Association, Africa and the Kenya Bankers Association have confirmed their participation in the event as “Supporting Organisations” and will be promoting it to all their members.
From the interest generated by speakers and various companies, the event organizers are happy that the conference will be even bigger than this year’s.
